Implant-retained Dentures

Many people who have lost their teeth find dentures hard to wear, this can be due to bone loss, insufficient palate, or sensitive gag reflex. Whatever is causing the problem, implant retained dentures could be the solution that you have been searching for to hold your dentures in place securely and comfortably. Implant retained dentures are made of high impact acrylic and are fixed securely in place by dental implants. As few as two implants could be needed for the lower jaw and usually four are required for the upper jaw, making this the most cost effective option for patients with no natural teeth remaining.

The benefits of implant retained dentures include:

  1. If your dentures become worn down over the years from daily usage, they can usually be replaced for a relatively low cost.
  2. The forces exerted during biting and chewing are absorbed by the gums, instead of being absorbed by the implants themselves.
  3. They are generally a much lower cost alternative to full arch implant bridge restorations.
  4. No need to worry about sticky denture adhesives or pastes.
  5. Facial structures are preserved as the dental Implants help to continue to stimulate the jawbone, avoiding this bone becoming lost through non-use.
  6. Lost lip support is restored, helping to reduce wrinkles around the mouth and stop premature aging in this area.
  7. Your ability to chew will be greatly improved.
  8. Implant retained dentures are secure and comfortable, so there is no need to worry about embarrassing moments caused by loose dentures.

Implant-retained Removable Over-Bridge

This restoration option includes a slim-line horseshoe shaped bridge. Normally 4 implants are used in this case, to replace the teeth on the entire upper, lower or both jaws. This type of bridge is made from an acrylic or cobalt chrome framework for added strength and is then fixed to the dental implants using 'click fit' locator abutments or a titanium bar. The benefits of this type of option when compared to a standard denture include:

  1. Having a horseshoe shaped restoration means that it does not cover the roof of the mouth, so is easy to tolerate and doesn't interfere with eating.
  2. Very comfortable, doesn't cause gum irritation like wearing a traditional denture would.
  3. You will be able to chew all foods, leading to an improved diet and health.
  4. Improved speech, no lisping, leading to increased confidence.
  5. Less invasive procedure surgically, as bone grafting can usually be avoided.
  6. Easy to remove and easy to clean.

Implant-retained Fixed Hybrid Bridge

This type of restoration is a bespoke slim-line bridge, which is fixed in place, usually with 4-6 implants, to replace all of the teeth on the upper, lower or both jaws. This type of bridge is also made from acrylic with a chrome cobalt framework for increased strength and durability.

The benefits on this option include:

  • As it says in the name, this type of bridge is fixed, meaning you will benefit from great stability and comfort.
  • As your bridge is fixed, it allows you the ability to eat and chew as you would with natural teeth. Allowing full enjoyment of food, with no dulled sensations of taste or texture.
  • Many people who have spent a long time with missing teeth or dentures might find their speech has been affected. Replacing these options with something fixed will give you back the ability to speak with confidence.

Implant-retained Fixed Bridge – Porcelain or Zirconia

A bespoke bridge which is fixed to 4-6 implants to replace all of the teeth on the upper, lower or both jaws. This type of bridge is made from porcelain or zirconia (all ceramic) with a titanium framework.

Benefits of this procedure when compared to the 'hybrid' bridge option include:

  1. Porcelain provides greater translucency and depth of colour, giving a more natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  2. Porcelain is harder, stronger, and more durable than other materials such as acrylic.
  3. Fixed securely in place, offering greater stability and comfort. Not removable so no need to worry about taking it out for cleaning or sleeping.
  4. You will be able to chew all foods, leading to an improved diet and health. Increased enjoyment of food as there is nothing on the palate interfering with taste or texture.
  5. Improved speech, no lisping, leading to increased confidence when speaking.

Implant-retained Immediate Fixed Bridge – Teeth in a Day

'Teeth in a day' is the perfect treatment for those who are looking to replace all the teeth on their upper jaw, lower jaw or both jaws in just a single day. Multiple final bridge options are available.

Benefits of teeth in a day treatment include:

  1. You will leave Belmore Dental with a set of fixed teeth, the very same day that you have your implants placed, eliminating the need to wear removable temporary teeth, such as dentures, during the healing stages.
  2. Your final teeth are also fixed in place and not removable, giving greater stability and comfort.
  3. Greatly cuts down the amount of appointments that are required.
  4. You will be able to chew all foods, leading to an improved diet and health.
  5. No issues with speaking, giving improved confidence.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are another revelation in the world of dentistry. This type of implant is an incredible alternative for patients who are unsuitable for traditional implants, often due to severe bone loss all throughout the jawbone. Zygomatic implants are actually not placed into the jawbone, rather they are a longer type of implant that is placed higher up in the cheekbone. Research has shown that zygomatic implants have a really high rate of success, this would make sense as they are inserted into the thick, dense cheekbone which provides the highest level of support. However, many patients are actually unaware of this option, as there are only a handful of clinics in the UK that offer this treatment, it takes an advanced level of surgical skill. At Belmore Dental both of our implant surgeons, Dr Sinead McEnhill and Dr Joe McEnhill, offer zygomatic implants.

Benefits Of Full Mouth Implant Restoration

Feeling like yourself again – Your replacement teeth are the next best thing to healthy natural teeth in the way that they look, feel and function. They are securely fused into your jawbone, meaning you can smile and eat as normal. Other replacement options can lead to bone loss, and may interfere with eating, smiling, speaking and other every day activities.

Anti-aging – Something that might not automatically come to mind with regards to dental implants is their 'anti-aging' effect. A face without teeth can sag and appear sunken, not only will a perfect smile help to keep you looking your best, dental implants also stimulate your jawbone like natural teeth, helping to avoid bone loss and keeping your face supported, youthful and full looking.

Enjoy Your Food Again – If you've been wearing dentures or suffering with missing teeth, dental implants will honestly be life changing. Your palate won't be obstructed so you can fully enjoy the tastes and textures of your food, and because dental implants feel and behave very much like your own teeth, you can bite and chew without worrying.

Built to Last – Dental Implants provide a strong and stable solution for missing teeth. Dental implants require just as much care and maintenance as natural teeth, you must attend regular review appointments with your dentist and hygienist to ensure that your mouth remains healthy. Traditional tooth supported dental bridges only last around 5-7 years, at some point they will need to be replaced, while dental implants may need to be adjusted periodically, with proper care they can last a life time.

Keep your teeth in your mouth, not in a cup – Dental implants are a permanent, fixed solution to missing teeth. Allowing you to keep your teeth where they belong, rather than worrying about removing them to clean after eating and when sleeping.

Predictable and safe treatment – Dental implant treatment is a reliable and safe method for replacing missing teeth, with a track record of great long-term success.
