Dental treatment and Facial Aesthetics are two things that we feel go hand in hand. We started offering facial aesthetics options at Belmore Dental as we found many of our patients coming in concerned by not only their teeth, but other issues such as lack of volume and structure in the mid face due to bone loss from missing teeth. This is why we believe that looking at the face holistically can be helpful when deciding on a treatment plan.
Over the years Anti-wrinkle injections (Botox) have gotten a bad name, mainly due to people confusing this treatment with the many over filled (dermal filler) faces of those in the public eye. Contrary to popular belief Anti-wrinkle injections do not change your facial features or add any volume whatsoever. Anti-wrinkle injections are simply used to relax certain muscles of the face, namely the forehead, to produce a reduction in muscular activity and softening of any fine lines present. In those without static lines, this treatment will actually help to prevent the formation of these wrinkles, and as we know, prevention is better than cure.
So, as we’ve established, Anti-wrinkle injections are mainly used to prevent and reduce wrinkles, however, they also have a multitude of other uses. They can be used to prevent excess sweating (hyperhidrosis), ease pain associated with TMJ from clenching or grinding the teeth, and even to prevent excess gum showing when you smile, known as gummy smile treatment.
Anti-wrinkle injections are an extremely safe and well researched treatment that carries very few risks. Most people will experience no side effects at all, and those who do are generally very mild. The possible risks associated with Anti-wrinkle injections include:
- Mild discomfort upon injection
- Bruising at the injection site
- Redness (usually subsides within the hour)
- Asymmetry (this is usually easily corrected)
